What are the best things for mental health?

Staying OFF Antidepressants and Benzodiazepines

I am not offering medical advice, but I want to raise awareness about the challenges these drugs can create. My goal is to help others avoid the difficult experience I’ve had.

Nearly 30 years ago, after the sudden and deeply traumatic loss of my fiancé on October 9, 1995, I was prescribed antidepressants within two months. No one told me that there was no long-term plan to safely discontinue these drugs. Once you start, the journey never truly ends. In my case, I have been left with severe depression and have never been without some form of medication since. Doctors simply swap one drug for another, without ever addressing the core issue.

Unless medication is absolutely necessary, I urge you to explore all other possible options. Therapy, grief counseling, and time may offer a different path—one I never got the chance to take.

These medications come with serious side effects, take months to show effects (if they help at all), and ultimately alter the brain in ways that may not be reversible. I will never know if I could have recovered naturally with support and time because that opportunity was taken from me.

I can’t go back, but I can share my experience so others approach these medications with caution. Please be fully informed before starting them, and consider all alternatives first.

That’s my story, and I hope it helps someone.
